Hi everyone just ask for help. I had an ich break last TUESDAY so i placed all my fishes to QT and give 1st two doses of Cupermine. Im planning to do WC later tonight. Do i have to make big %WC? Im noticing Ammonia is building up on my QT now. Thank you for your advise. #ich #sickfish #cupermine

Test ammonia daily. If it is too high do a WC if after water change the ammonia is still too high then do another one until at the right level. A ammonia badge on the glass is super helpfull for QT I’d get one if you don’t have one already.

Like 25% WC ok?

Sure, just test after the WC to make sure the ammonia is not building up.

You may want to use some Bio Spira or something similar to add some good bacteria to help with the Ammonia and Nitrite. Also, make sure you stay within the therapeutic range of the copper when doing water changes. You may want to switch to Copper Power since the therapeutic range is much wider and easier to achieve while still doing water changes.

Do you plan on leaving your DT empty for the 72 days required to rid it of Ich?

Yup planning to leave the DT empty just corals.

Also, i dont have biospira at the moment but im planning to do 10% WC is that sufficient ? My copper level is within range though.

Depends on how high the ammonia is and how big the tank is. I would shoot for 25%, but just make sure you test it again after the water change and make sure you stay on top of it. Ammonia is not the only thing to worry about, because as soon as it is gone, you will have a Nitrite spike as well for a while before the tank is cycled. You really need to kick-start the cycle with some good bacteria if you plan on leaving the fish in that tank for 72 days.

Sorry i got confused... the biospira is for the QT right while doing WC?

My Display tank has corals on it

Just to let you know, I used Bio Spira in all my QT Tanks and it took about 24-48 hours for ammonia to spike at .25 ppm then it went to 0 the next day and Nitrite started to spike. Nitrite rose to about 5.0 ppm over the next three days and then went to 0 and Nitrate rose to about 10 ppm then I did a water change and all is well. The whole cycle takes about 6 - 8 days and the spikes were not big enough or long enough to worry about.

Yes, Bio Spira is a bottle of good bacteria to help kick start the cycle for your QT, (not the DT). There is also API Quickstart and Dr Tim's One and Only if your LFS does not have Bio Spira.

I have used Bio Spira a few times now and it cycles the tank in 6-8 days with small Ammonia and Nitrite spikes that were not high enough or long enough to affect my fish. You could also take some filter media from your DT with good bacteria on it and place it in the filter of the QT. You would probably have to restart the counter on the QT at that time since you will be bringing Ich that hasn't been in the copper over, but the alternative is doing water changes every few days for the next 72 days since the cycle will never really complete that way.

Thank you for that info!!! I’ll try the biospira...

I have a 90gallon QT. I will use biospira after i do 10-20% WC. Then check for spikes of nitrate and ammonia. Do it for 72 days. Do i always put biospira every so often?

No, once it is cycled it should be good to go. The directions say to add some whenever doing water changes and I do sometimes and when I change out filter media, but not sure if it's necessary or I'm just paranoid.

Alright so i’ll buy biospira and do WC later :-)
