So I have a reef aquarium and I just added new fish. Woke up this morning my lieutenant tang is covered in it. Tried to catch him but can't. I don't wanna stress him out more trying to catch the poor guy. Started feeding dr.gs anti parasite food. Do you guys have any other suggestions? I added a bristletooth tang yesterday before I saw the ich and the lieutenant tang is showing aggression to the new comer as I suspected. If the lieutenant tang is eating and acting normal should I be worried?

If it became covered in spots nearly overnight, you're not dealing with ich you're dealing with velvet. Your fish probably has less than 48 hours to live, you'll need to remove all of your fish, and treat them with CP or copper for 30 days.

Going forward to prevent this, qt everything wet that goes in to your tank.

Velvet is everywhere these days... no qt is not a gamble to take anymore.

I know you don't want to hear that, sorry...

I'm using my acclimation box as a trap, caught four of them already. It's baited with clams, roe, and an algae clip.

And, I caught my mandarin with a strobe light [emoji23]

If you can get a couple of pictures we might be able to confirm ich vs. velvet. Is he swimming into the flow, hiding more, breathing hard, covered with a dusty film, lethargic, etc?

Either way, you are going to want to get them into a QT if you want it gone.

I'm working on treating my tank, too. Feel free to follow along:

I completely drain my tank just to catch all my fishes transfer to qt
If you don't cp it will die

I don't believe the spots happened overnight. I just think they got worse. Also I believe it's ich. I know what velvet is and it's not that. I'm forsute

If a fish is covered in spots is almost never ich. :/

Either way I would catch and quarantine as others have said. Best to cure and be done with it whether ich or velvet. Any pictures?

+1 Copper or CP covers both diseases, so that eliminates any guesswork.
