OK so as i read and read and read , and soak up all this information i see alot about people with ich and I read bits here and there about managing it seemingly for long periods of time .....

so is ich something that once you get it you just deal with it forever or can one get rid of it completely

You can get rid of it. You just have to keep the fish out of for 45 days or so while they are in copper.

Ich can live in the dt forever and not harm any fish.

It's when fish immune system drops because of some stress event that ich will attack the fish as their slime coats are weakened.

Thats why you read about fish getting white spots when new fish are added or when something is changed, fish are reacting to the change and stressing lowering immune system.

It is possible to run an ich free system, however every single things that goes into tank has to be qt for loooong periods of time then moved into DT.

The only time my fish got ick was on my very first tank with my first fish (about 20 year ago) because I was inexperienced and did not have the knowledge. Fish get ick primarily because of stress , like our own immune systems get weaker when we are stressed. If you are experienced, patient, have good water, know how to acclimate and add fish to the tank properly (not 3 fish at a time), and dont overstock your tank, you will never see disease in your tank. IMO (I'm sorry, but...) if the fish have ick, 9 times out of 10 it is the result of poor tank conditions
