So I really like having access to ICP testing such as triton, it’s a nice way to get a fuller picture of the tanks chemistry. My sps haven’t been growing and the color has been off, I found my Neptune probe holder was rusting while working in my sump, I went back to my icp test and see they don’t list neodymium; nothing else was outside what they claim as acceptable. I can’t be certain neodymium (oxides) are “rusting” off the magnet and the oxidation is purely iron based, but if there was an ICP method that could be easily implemented into the basic tests this might be a good way to know a neodymium magnet (which it seems a lot of holders use) is leaching.

Here is a pic of the holder for reference

I am not sure what exactly a neodymium magnet is made from, but I am sure there is impurities in the iron that may not be good for your tank... also not sure that iron is the only thing that oxidizes orange...I had this happen to several of my tunze stream pump holders... now they are magnet free mixing pumps... expensive way to mix salt water...

It's very strange that Triton does not measure neodymium. In Iran, our ICP-OES is from the Spectro Company (Made in Germany), which is measures neodymium.

Neodymium magnets are standard iron magnets enriched with the elemental neodymium along with some boron. Interesting in the Wikipedia page they mention they are prone to coronation and covered often with Nickel and copper

I figured it would be an easy method, I’m sure NSW is super low and no one would want to dose it. Just had the idea it would
Be an effective test to look for magnet leaching. Maybe #askbrstv could look into it ?

Copper-Nickel ! Toxic elements for corals.
