ICP help

Randy,

This is my second ICP test over the last 3 weeks with this most recent test being approx 3 hours after a 17% water change.

Please let me know what you think especially with my now new high manganese level.

Is there anything I need to do? I did switch to Red Sea blue bucket about 3 weeks ago and this is my first ICP with Red Sea.

FYI- I only dose KH and Calcium both Red Sea.

If you can, try to collect your ICP sample about 48hrs after the last water change to avoid interference with the results. Most of these salt companies are boosting Manganese and Iron in the salt because they’re consumed rapidly. IMO, most of these values aren’t gonna be accurate due to the water change.

I don’t like how Reef Labs is listing trace elements in mg/L when most other labs list in ug/L.

I would not worry about the manganese unless you are dosing it.

Not dosing anything other than Red Sea KH and Calcium daily and Mag manually every so often to stay around 1400ppm.

I have been contemplating dosing Red Sea Trace Colors ABCD at 1/4 -1/2 dose 1 week. What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Also, what are your thoughts on the timing of ICP tests after water changes? Is there any value in me doing another test now? Reef labs is only a couple miles from my houser and i have the ability to get a sample this morning and it would be approx 48 hours after I pulled the last sample which was roughly right after my last water change.

The interesting thing is i spoke yesterday with my LFS (a very good one) talking about this and they told me they just did ICP with Reef Labs on their freshly mixed saltwater in their holding tank and it shows low on Manganese with the same salt.

I don't agree that any particular timing is important. One just needs to take whatever the timing is into account in terms of things that might have been added or removed by the water change, and which may be rapidly changing. The idea that the manganese came from the new salt water is plausible, and a test now might validate that idea, or refute it, but in the end it doesn't matter much (IMO) since I do not consider the current value a problem. That said, it certainly couldn't hurt to get a second test.

I think the trace element dosing is an OK experiment to see if anything apparently changes in the tank.

I’ll give this experiment a go and pull a sample this morning and let you know how it comes out.

On the trace color dosing would I be safer doing a 1/4, 1/2 dose, etc? I don’t want to really screw things up. What’s your thoughts on the timing ICP testing after I dose Trace colors? In your experience do people typically see a benefit (better color, etc) after trace color dosing when they have values similar to mine?

Reef Labs is very close to me and I can have results in 24-36 hours. I also have two very large LFS (lots of coral) near me that use Reef labs and they have great looking tanks and corals.

Just trying to understand Ive only recently started ICP testing.

Only the zinc seems especially high to me, but I do not know if it is high enough to be an issue.
