I agree, if your solution evaporated the actual gravity would be higher than what is on the label.

That's what I use, also get a graduated cylinder so it doesn't move around in your tank.

I am curious about making DIY solution. Unfortunately it has to use 2L bottle. I would have tried it if its using smaller bottle

You can scale the recipe up or down to meet your needs. The reason Randy recommends a 2L bottle is because the large size minimizes measurement error and allows reefers to use readily-available measurement devices, such as standard measuring cups and measuring spoons. The base recipe for a refractometer is 3.65 grams of salt in 96.35 grams of water. If you have a scale that's precise enough, you can make a solution in this quantity.

I have a digital scale that measures to hundredths of a gram that I got from Target. I make the conductivity standard for conductivity meters as is, which is 3.29g of salt in 182g of fresh water.
