I just purchased a couple small pieces of live rock from my LFS. Over the last week or so, I've noticed a weird looking pattern growing on one of the small rocks. I have no idea what this is but it looks pretty cool. Anyone know what it could be? Ideas would be helpful! Thanks guys!

Oh and don't mind my green live rock. We've hit the wonderful green stage, heading into purple. :)

looks like dead porites skeleton, pretty much the most common coral in the ocean, sometime's its skeleton is sold with other live rock.

Agree. Perhaps it could be a leptastrea skeleton as another option?

Looks to me like its a coral skeleton of some sort.

Thank you! Do you think they might ever grow back with a little tlc? I mean, the rock was pretty bare when I purchased it so maybe it's pretty likely?

Typically no unless there was some sort of tissue still on the rock. If its 100% bare and all skeleton then you will more than likely not ever see anything come back on it.

definitely not
even if there was tissue left, it would die in anew tank

Thank you both! I'll leave the rock where it is and let it do its thing. There are some feather dusters on it so who knows! Cheers!
