When I got my tank... these (apparently) were so dormant that I thought they were just skeletons of something from the rocks past... the previous owner had no lights on the tank whatsoever.... but 2-3 weeks after I took over they started opening and are just flourishing.... any ideas what they are??

Toxic as in no good or just the name? They have grown so much... the stems on some are over 1.5 inches...

Toxic as in the name. Palys and zoas tend to grow quick and can get out of control if you plan on having a mixed reef.

Toxic also as no good if you frag them. These are one of the ones high in palytoxin so wear gloves and glasses if you frag or tear them at all. I personally would keep these seperate from your rockwork and let them grow on their own island.
