I originally thought that I had diatoms but this issue has been ongoing for well over 6 months. A few things of note: the tank is a little over a year old, phosphates are low around 0.03 ppb, nitrates are a little elevated around 40 ppm. I just did a chemiclean treatment thinking that it might be Cyanobacteria and am scheduled for the 20% water change later today. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I would say that that is Cyanobacteria, if it’s already been through the red stringy stage then I would say it’s being beaten by the tank

also, that’s a very nice looking Ctenochaetus flavicauda.

back onto the topic, I can try get a picture of my 4’ tank’s dying cyano if you would like (It would just take around 16 hours or more-)

Thank you and that would be wonderful!
I’m not sure exactly how it’s supposed to look after the chemiclean treatment and before the water change but right now it looks basically unchanged after the 48 hour wait.

Yeah, if it was alive it would have spread all over the tank by now however since it’s dying off it’ll look unchanged but it won’t be quite so thick or overtaking

Thank you!
What did you do to kill the cyano in your tank?
I just did water changes, then let the tank take its course (also added two algae eaters which were a Foxface and a Ctenochaetus binotatus)
