Under the microscope they’re mostly giant mats but I isolated one on it’s own. I've looked under the microscope multiple times and the shape and color looks like dino (coolia specifically) but I can never see them moving. They look dark red mats in the tank and it’s only on the sand. I thought it was cyano but neither Chemiclean or Ultra Red Slime remover worked.

Any ideas? @taricha I know you're a pro if you're around?
May be an image of standing

Looks like coolia. When in big mats I've found the ones at the edges move but the denser areas don't. This is a video I took a year or so ago.

Interesting! To be fair I've only got a few patches, they haven't been expanding but they haven't been receding. Thanks for the extra info.

My guess is it's a resting cyst (of some dino).
more pics for context may help, but if none move - then that's gonna be my best guess.
