Hello so I got a free coral frag from my LFS but have no idea what it's is. Would it be safe with peppermint shrimp?

Not SPS. They look like some kind of palys. Nothing that should have an issue with peppermint shrimp. Lots of coraline on the rock.

Watch these brown polyps very carefully. The are very hardy and can be invasive enough to become pests. Don't place them against another rock in your tank until you can determine how fast they are growing.

On the rock with the polyps there's a small white starfish looking thing with very long and skinny arms. Is that a good, bad or indifferent hitchhiker?

Most likely a micro brittle star except they're usually a darker brownish gray not white. If it is one they're good to have.
