phyto, rotifers of the like. They're harmless but can reach plague proportions if left unchecked. The problem is if there is a mass die off they will emit a toxin that can cause lots of problems for a reef tank. People either treat the tank with flatworm exit (or something similar) to kill them off, or get a predator like a couple wrasses to keep them at bay.

Something worth considering...
 
These can be nuisance as they regenerate quickly, have no lungs and therefore are survivors and repair themselves when cut into pieces. They food on oxygen and some slime.
