ID My New Mystery Tang

I just got this from my LFS and nobody there knew what it was. They guessed Lavender or Palani, but we're just guessing.They didn't even have it listed with a price on the Tank. They asked if I was interested and I took it. For $24, it is worth it regardless of the ID. It is almost pure white with very faint yellow on some fins. Anyone know?

It is Ctenochaetus strigosus. With time and good care/feeding, it should regain its good color. Juvenile C. strigosus, C. truncatus, and C. flavicauda all start off yellow and get their dark red and striped/spotted patterns as they age.

That is C. truncatus, the OP has C. strigosus. C. truncatus are never striped, and C. strigosus have a spotted head.

So a Kole Tang? They said it came that way and I've never seen one anywhere near this white. What would make it's color so off?

Okay, maybe not Kole...not strigosus....could it be striatus? If so, makes more sense. Coloring looks closer.

Not particularly, a healthy C. striatus is very dark in color across the body, just like almostall othsr speckes of Ctenochaetus. I still suggest C. strigosus, but you will find out in a few weeks if it sirvives and is given a good diet, keep us posted

Ctenochaetus binotatus. Based on striped body, spotting on the head, and tail shape. Definitely treat with Prazi. It should most certainly color back up.

Even the juvies of that species have the twin spots near the tail, this one doesn't.

Yeah, that is true. We'll see in a couple of weeks

I'm not sure this is stress coloring. The LFS said they've had it for six weeks, it eats and acts normal and it has been that pale all along.

I was also told that a Kole should have the yellow around the eyes by now. Possibly a hybrid?

It's definitely in the (bristletooth) tang family. It looks like a Kole (blue eye and yellow eye have slightly different color bodies) tang to me and if they are stressed they will have a faded color to them. We have had one before and know have a tomini tang which is in the same family and stay smaller. It's bad a fish store doesn't know what they are getting in. Feed a lot of nori and maybe he will color up over time as he matures.

I think that this came from a trip they made to hand pick in Los Angeles. I've been going there for a few years now and they seem to know their stuff most of the time.

I threw in some Prazi today and it ate Nori earlier.

I like the Two Spots, so I guess we will see how the color turns out around the eye...

It still looks very much like the first picture (from the LFS). It eats pretty much everything and is getting better about coming out from it's PVC hiding spot in QT. So far, I'm still stumped.
