This stuff is mainly growing on the uppermost rocks and has grown into some recesses in the Monti cap I mounted a few weeks ago. It’s definitely not cyano as it’s very difficult to scrape off. It feels slippery/rubbery and is thin.

Likely sponge but would need pics under white lightingThis stuff is mainly growing on the uppermost rocks and has grown into some recesses in the Monti cap I mounted a few weeks ago. It’s definitely not cyano as it’s very difficult to scrape off. It feels slippery/rubbery and is thin.![]()
It doesn’t look or feel like a sponge. It’s very thin and encrusted over the rock much like coralline. This is the best pic I can get under more white lightLikely sponge but would need pics under white lighting
Much better pic and this looks like an algae called Dictyota. Removal of this stuff is not the easiest but can be accomplished by using a dental pick or similar tool and lift and chip away (best done in a container of tank water). more established parts may have to be scraped. It doesn’t look or feel like a sponge. Thank you!!! I have a lot of chitons that hitchhiked on some live rock that I started with. Is this algae a nuisance that I need to address or is it ok to just let the CUC deal with it?Much better pic and this looks like an algae called Dictyota. After youve addressed this, add some cleaners such as:
Chiton and limpet snails
Ninja star snails
pin cushion urchin
pitho crabs
Female emerald crabs
If it gets established, it will be harder to removeThank you!!! I have a lot of chitons that hitchhiked on some live rock that I started with. Is this algae a nuisance that I need to address or is it ok to just let the CUC deal with it?
