Are they sponges? A friend brought them back from Marathon, FL.

If they WERE most likely they are dead. Exposure to air is a big no no for sponge. Air gets trapped in channels

Oops. I had no idea. I was more concerned about him taking it from the Keys... How can one tell if a sponge is alive or not? They're in a quarantine tank and look spongy.

If they start to rot, they were dead. Keep an eye on them and maybe they will be ok. I've had hit or miss with sponges, but like others mentioned they do better if they are kept underwater. GL

Exposed to air kills sponges. The air builds up and can't escape the sponge dies.

Can be a week or a month to see the effects. I've exposed sponge to air and most of it survived. Can't say this is the norm though. Give it some more time and hopefully it pulls through fine
