ID Pistol shrimp (safe for goby?)

Hello,

I bought this pistol shrimp at LFS before reading that some pistol shrimp do not pair up with gobies. Is this the kind to pair up or to just be by itself?

Do you know what type of pistol it is? Looks similar to a red Caribbean pistol shrimp which normally don't pair with a goby but more likely to pair with an anemone.

I have no idea what kind of pistol it was just sold under the name “pistol shrimp”

That’s a tough one. Doesn’t look like any of the ones that are common for pairing up. You can always give it a try but let me tell you right now... they’re a real PITA to get out. I bought a bullseye pistol shrimp only to find out that they don’t pair with gobies.

How would you get it out? I’m assuming using a bottle trap? I can’t really take apart the rock work

My attempt was a crap show. I tried taking the rocks apart and he just went way into the rock holes. I set up two bottle traps and after a couple hours he came out hunting and I managed to trap him with the help of my brother. My biggest advice will be let the bottle traps do their work and if they don't work just try to lure him out and be patient.

I bought the same one, I threw him in my refugium tank though, need someone to stir up the sand in there..

I also believe that the shrimp is not blind either, because he hides when I come looking at him, and therefor doesn’t need a goby to guid him.

I think so too, I might try catching him and bring him back to the lfs

Keep him, they are very cool. Also very shy, so you will see him mostly at night I think , my refugium is lite at night and that’s where I put him, I have a tiger pistol and a orange spotted goby in the display tank.
