I've attempted to have this ID'd in the past. Please see the maroon colored objects in the attached pics - 1 old and 1 new. I think it is a type of sponge. It branches as it grows and does not retract when touched. It is fairly tough to break apart like a plant. It came in as a hitchhiker years ago.
