I'm unsure of the name, but yes its a goby and we have the same down here in GA. I have one in my reef tank
 
There are literally thousands of different gobies.
Whichever that is, looks to be one that will stay smaller than 2"
 
Not sure if you ever ID'd this goby, but it is probably either a naked goby (Gobiosoma bosc) or a seaboard goby (Gobiosoma ginsburgi). They look very similar. Naked gobies are more common in shallow water where you probably were collecting. I catch 100 naked gobies to 1 seaboard goby (I've caught 2 of them). My guess is that your fish if it survived since then is an adult now, and much easier to ID.

By the way, I meant to ask you in my other post, how are your pipefish doing now?
