ID this critter?

This strange thing was sticking out of a snail shell this morning. I think the snail is dead now.

In the photos below this creature is riding on the shell of a hermit crab. It is truly the weirdest hitchhiker we've seen in 5 years of the hobby. It definitely looks like an animal of some sort. Any ideas? Is it dangerous?

It looks like a snail is eating some type of muscle that was growing on the shell the hermit is in. I’d sump whatever that snail is if it’s alive. If the snail is dead I’d sump the hermit and shell.
