We need some help identifying this fish. We've had him for about a year and he has been one of the most useful animals in our reef. I had been unsuccessful taking a pic of him till he photo bombed us. He is about 5 inches long. We collected him locally from a tidal puddle as a fry. He spends his whole day gulping up huge amounts of sand, sifting it, and then spreads it out over the whole sand bed. These sort of fish are often considered bait around here. There was another similar species we had for a while, but it got too large and wasn't reef safe.

Striped Killifish, Fundulus majalis. That's a very good specimen. I called it a Mummichog at first, but I guess a distinction has been made between Mummichogs and Killifish since I was a marine biologist in N.C. It's commonly called a Mud Minnow. And I guess now calling it a Striped Mummichog would be incorrect.
