I suppose "white stringy thing" isn't entirely helpful? Maybe try to get a closeup for one of the eagle-eyed hitchhiker experts.
Unfortunately do to my camera limitations that’s probably the best I can do ATM. . . They are the white strings against the black background and baffle in the picture.
 
Either a young hydra or nematode.
 
Sorry, wouldn’t let me edit my last post, not trying to double post.

got a few photos of it out of the tank. Against white paper it seems more brown than white.

I don’t think it’s Hydra, my understanding is Hydra will move when you touch it, and this stuff does not. Only moves with the water flow.

Still very open to any thoughts. Could it be some sort of strange algae I’m not familiar with?
