Can someone help me Id this green coral. I grabbed it for $5 at the LFS but don't know what it is. Does anyone know? I'm thinking its a scoly but it's shaped weird...it looks like it's taking the shape of the rock I put it on.

Moved to current forum: LPS ID. Maybe you will get your answer here. :)

Not a scoly. But maybe a cousin. It is tiny so may be hard to tell from picture. Maybe ones under white lights, too much blue. One when not so inflated so you can see it's skeleton base.

Thanks for your help. Is he good on the rock where it's at or should I move him and have him level out a bit?

Without knowing what type of coral it is, anything would be just a guess. Always side on caution low tank and light. This is a good practice if you do not know the coral. Even if you know the coral. You do not know if your lighting is stronger than where it was before you got it. Once you know what it is you can determine if it stays or start to acclimate to higher light levels.

Got it I'll leave it at the bottom...would you suggest putting it on a flat surface like a flat rock? Cause it almost looks like it's melting on to the rock.

It is just inflating. Many LPS fo this. They expand to basically eat. By absorbing nutrients from water or from lighting. Some corals are bothered if placed on sand bed, it irritates their flesh. Others prefer sand bed. So really until you know what coral it is there is no true answer. But is its flesh is bellowing over its skeleton a flat surface may be better. Less chance of damage.

Ok ill move him to a flat surface. Thanks again!

Mine is on a frag plug which was placed on a rock. It looked as if it was melting down the plug as it grew. As far as flow and lighting mine has been in moderate flow and medium/high lighting. Like tab said, start off low and move it up.

Mine started about the same size as yours. Two years later and it is one of my favorite pieces in the tank. Believe it or not there's a frag plug in there somewhere.

Nice reverse prism. When i had to move mine it turned all green. Looked like a piece of melted plastic. Too much light was the reason, not enough that would kill it but enough to morph the colors.

WOW!! It grew out really nice!! Thank you guys for helping me ID it. I've had it for about a year and I've been moving it all over the tank trying to find the right spot. Now that I know what it is, I can place him where he needs to be. Thanks again for the help guys...you guys ROCK!
