Im trying to work out an idea I have for a zoo garden. Im thinking of using some of the flat cut marco rocks pieces to make a zoo garden. Hear me out and look at my crude drawing I did on paint.

This would be from the side view of the main rock structure. The big circle is one of two islands in the tank and the rest is kind of explanatory. I would drill holes for frag plugs where the arrows are pointed and once the zoo frags filled in it would be a solid covering of zoos.

Any comments?ideas? Am i ripping this off or is this mindblowingly innovative? JK :)

Feel free to comment and I take constructive criticism very well

this is a crude napkin drawing :)
drilling may not me necessary if you cut the sticks off the frag plugs with something like a Dremel or a pair of pliers.

From what Ive seen, you should first grow the zoas out on the plug or small rock to the point that the plug is covered. When you glue a bunch of frags on one rock eventually they will run out of space to grow and sometimes one zoa takes over others. I would look through joshporksandwhich threads because he has some of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen lol

Love Zoa gardens and I agree, just cut stems off plugs and glue to rocks. No need to drill. As an example, here is my garden on the short end of the peninsula. I simply took various pieces of rock and have a "garden" area. Others have been installed in the vacant areas since this picture was taken.

If you look on the far right of this picture you will see it:

A close up of a portion of the garden itself:

I don't have any fancy zoa's but I think (albeit I'm biased) it looks pretty good.

I kinda like the idea of drilling holes that way i could remove the plug if i ever felt like switching them out. Gluing would definitely be easier and will probably be the route I choose.

Looks great dbl. Im thinking now that my idea might look unnatural. Maybe I should just just stack pieces of LR rubble together with zoo colonies on them. I don't have fancy zoos either but I have no doubt that if any were to take over, like swayed suggested, it surely wouldn't be my nicer ones.

Anyone else have pics of their zoo gardens?

you could always frag when they start to grow out I personally don't like growing zoos on flat rock because I think its harder to frag from I like rock with a lot of nooks n crannies lol I find I easier to snip the rock or use a dremmel to frag that's just my opinion though there is a ton of ways to do tings in this hobby just gotta experiment and see what works for you could always get some small pieces of rock say palm size and just place them close together

It doesn't need to a be thin flat rock. You can make a zoa garden on any rock shape, I just glue zoas on the rock and they grow on it. I actually prefer something round over something flat. A flat zoa garden looks like it's been painted on a board.
