i'm starting my aquascape and am curious what is recommended for distance from the top rock to the water line?-- probably be sps up top with lps and such lower - will be 2 islands of different height- worried about the taller island height-

I usually shoot for 2/3 the height. This is aesthetically pleasing and gives corals room to grow. I like a large structure 2/3 the water height and then a second structure about 2/3 the height of the first.

There really isn't an optimal height....there are some very cool reef tanks were the rock breaks the surface of the water. Just do whatever looks best to you and what gives you room to mount whatever coral you are trying to keep.
