I switched from a skimz algae reactor to a refrugium in my red sea 425xl added a kessil refrugium light. My question is I currently have chaeto and want to harvest copepods but what else can I add to the refrugium that will be beneficial? I've seen the little media cubes for the copepods I've seen people add sand etc. Also other than chaeto what other microalgae can I add? Input please

If you have fish that eat macro you could grow Dragon’s Breath or Sea Lettuce. The fish will eat it and the pods that are on it will be eaten or flee the macro into your tank.

Yes a gem tang and the yellow cori wrasse nips at the nori leaf

Well I already have some mirale mud I haven't added I just ordered sea lettuce and pom pom I'm already growing chaeto and ordered phyto with copepods and the 12 2inch cubes for the copepods to harvest I think this will do for now. Should I add sand? I have some fiji pink left from when I set up the tank

I don’t have experience with miracle mud or sand in a fuge. Hopefully others chime in with input.

I have rock rubble in my fuge, but you have me thinking about checking out the cubes your talking about for pod hotels. I use the rubble to attach frags to, so having blocks to stay in my fuge is a great idea.

Marinepure blocks as bed. I used the 2” cubes.

If you can create a small partition without macro and small flow with rock like marine pure, copapods will live there.

Some snails...some small feeder shrimp to scavenge food detritus.

Refugium is awesome! Enjoy.

Make sure you are dosing something to support your fuge. I do triton and that is built into core program but there are other products like the brightwell stuff. If your cheato disintegrates you’ll know why.

I also like the red graciliaria. Check out rusalty.com.

Thanks

I have been dosing red sea ABCD which is iron potassium iodine bio.elements will that work ? And my chaeto was growing nicely in my algae reactor before switching to refrugium today

Srry but i need to add one more thing since you got me started on this topic. Those pics of perfectly clean fuges with the perfect ball of chaeto spinning, that is def not my experience or what i would strive for but would love to hear alternate view. Fuge is to be left fairly undesturbed, let it do its thing. Bad things happen when i try to manipulate it excessively. When it is working well, the water smells clean in there. Love it! I have a very small fuge though, reefer 170 stock sump with mods.

Update!!! Everything is growing like crazy here is a short little video. Dont mind the little aptaisia it will be gone soon !
