Ideas instead of filter socks?

Hey all,
I do not want to run filter socks because I am not confident I will change them frequently enough. I have heard of people ditching them completely but what is the alternative? I do not want to buy a fleece roller because they’re all very pricey. Can I just fill the section where my socks go of my sump with bio media and put some filter floss on top?

Just nothing? Reef tanks were awesome before socks, rollers, etc. Save the space in case you want to add an extra skimmer.

Nobody ever needed filter socks.

I jam poly fill between a set of baffles. I still replace it every few weeks though.

You can get cups instead of socks and just use filter floss. At least it saves you from having to wash the socks, just toss the old floss every 3-4 days and put in new floss.
