Hi!

I've got a HOB Aquaclear 70. I was wondering what filter media people use?

My water doesn't stink, but my filter poofs out detritus and more, making my water look...."dirty." You can see it especially when you have the filter off, then turn it back on. It seems like my carbon bag traps a lot of crap.

Right now I'm running sponge, carbon, phosguard, purigen then biomax.

My bioload is 3 clowns and a small one spot foxface....with mostly live rock, live sand and some dry rock.

Any suggestions that work best for you?

I use a bit of filter floss under the sponge.
I like to clean them twice a month.

Do you like using activated carbon or is that a "meh?"
Yes I do. I run only carbon actually.
I dont run the other stuff.

I look at a aquaclear as primarily a mechanical filter to trap stuff, that means I have to clean it.
Anything else in there is using it as a reactor and that works very well too. I use refugium etc for other nutrient control

Awesome, thanks!

Interesting bug/trick.

I pressed nothing but the reply button on that post, never saw the edit box, and it was already on the website.

You either need to clean the filter more often or buy some coral so you can call it coral feeding and not worry about it. I am 90% serious. Cleaning is a good idea, but I am lazy and I like corals more than fish. ;)

Ha! I do plan on adding corals eventually.

Untill then, just make it as easy to clean as you can so frequent cleaning aren't a big problem. :)

Will do! I haven't actually cleaned anything out yet, I've just been replacing my carbon filters every 3 to 4 weeks. I'm sure it's due for a good cleaning.

It's a bag of carbon what came with that filter?

Do you have the "stack" that came with it all running currently? Sponge and carbon? Anything else?

I run sponge, carbon, phosguard, purigen and the biomax.
The sponge and biomax have not been changed, just the carbon.

If you have sand and live rock, I'd drop the biomax just because it shouldn't be necessary and it'll be in the way every time you clean.

If the tank is as new as it sounds, I'd cease the carbon, phosgaurd and purigen until you need them. I don't really see the point of those in a fish only tank. (I barely see the point in a coral tank, but it makes at least a little more sense to me.)
