Today I’ve got a 90 gallon display which has a Gyre 150 (running at 70% 24 hours a day) and a couple small older model hydor koralia power heads to keep water flow moving behind the rocks. Tank is standard 4 foot length mixed reef. Personally I like the Gyre and intend to keep using it. Seeing the fish sit in the current like humans on a treadmill is sweet.

Upgrading to a 120 (4’x2’x2’) and want more flow and ability to create random flow. Yes, I’d still like the ability to create a gyre for periods of time. During the night I’d like the ability to dial things back, maybe put the gyre in reverse mode and use a secondary power head to create a gentle night mode.

Made an impulse buy and picked up an FS14000 wave maker thinking this would work. Thinking more about it I wonder if I made a mistake. Initially the guy at the LFS recommended a couple Hydor units controlled by the Hydor Smartwave but then he talked to someone else and suggested the FS14000.

Any suggestions? Keep in mind I intend to keep the Gyre, just want to supplement flow and create periods of random flow.

Would the gyre 150 and a couple Hydor units controlled by the Smartwave be a good option? Or is the FS14000 a good decision?

In the new tank I'm going for open rock work to minimize dead spots. If necessary I've got a couple small "old" hydors I can use to move water behind rocks. I'm more interested in flow throughout the tank.

Bumping for another related question.

I just bought a 130 Gyre and want to use it in conjunction with my MP40. The tank is still in the setup stage, so neither have been installed yet. I was thinking of placing the MP40 on the back of the tank as centered as I can get it (the overflow extends nearly 1/2 the length of the tank) and placing the Gyre along one of the sides. Thought on that placement? Is there a better placement for the MP40?

What size is ur tank?

Placement will also depend on rock work. My gyre 150 is waiting on a new drive motor (awesome support service from Carlos at Coralvue, lighting fast). I've got a 4ft long 120 and opted to supplement the gyre with the MP40. Friday the gyre drive motor will arrive so I'll spend the weekend working on placement and dialing it in. Update to follow.

It's a 93 gallon tank with odd dimensions since it was previously a frag tank. It is 36 L x 30 W x 20 x H. It's the width that makes it a challenge unless i were to run 4 powerheads in there, which i don't want to.

Would love to hear your thoughts once you get the 150 repaired.

Just got the new motor last night. May not get a chance to work on it till the weekend. With ur tank being near square u may want to try standing the gyre on end (tall). As opposed to creating a gyre across the top plan of the water create a gyre across the front or back of the tank. Then add another power head to create turbulence in the center of the tank. All this depends on sand bed, rock placement and types of corals. I've learned from a few years of reefing experience that there is no exact science. What works for one doesn't always work for another. Good luck. Once get mine running (probably this weekend) I'll post some pics.

The Gyre 150 has been back in operation for a few days. Currently I'm running the XF150 standing upright along right front edge of the tank. I've got the MP40 placed on the same side pushing water along the center of the tank. Got an old hydor on the far left behind the rocks to keep flow moving on the back side. The XF150 is in alternating mode 1 hr with 30% forward speed and 50% reverse. The MP40 is at 80% in reef crest mode. All the corals are moving randomly. I'm not completely happy with it yet. Only time will tell if this configuration is working for me. It all depends on the types of corals and rock work oh ya and sand bed. A buddy runs a bare bottom 150 (square) with 2 MP 40 and he provides lots of flow. I'd like to crank the pumps up more but i have a sand storm so I need patience and time to fine tune it. Good luck.

I got a 130 and rw-4 running on the right side of the tank. Rw-4 is pushing water behind the rock.

I am semi content with the set up. Reason being, the 130 is loud if over 50% (rw is quiet all the way 100%). I am thinking about adding another rw just to kill all dead spots and for more random flow.

I have a 68G tank, 35.5"x24"x18", that I use a XF130, (2) MP-10s and my return, @ 700GPH, for my circulation. I love the random circulation I get from this combo. So I'd say MP-10s to add for your tank.

Good Luck!
