Not at all.

Once you start adding corals to the tank don't be surprised if you see a rebirth in the population though. They can hitchhike there way into our tanks quite easily. GL.
 
I agree with the Vermetid diagnosis. Hope for your sake that they're not still alive. One way to check for life would be to add some small particlate food to the tank. If they are alive, they will extrude some sticky filaments that they use to naturally catch food. I use a small jewelers hammer to smash them then I find them. Good luck...
 
Does having just the shells hurt anything?
No, nothing will get hurt. IMO they are vermitid forsure. If the rocks been out for 3yrs forsure they're dead. The shells/twisted things they stay in is permanent and the only way to take them off is breaking them off. If they were alive I've read several people using crazy glue right on the tip to close the opening.
