Hi all, hopefully you can help? Newbie at 10weeks in, had a few mistakes, but we we have a Fluval EVO stock light, Eheims 1000, Jecods SW-2, about 750g of Bio-Home. Started with Live sand and mixture of dead and live rock (so have bristles worm, some free Zoas, fan worms and it appears, some aptasia).
We have fish, a clown and a tail spot blenny, tronchus, nasarius (rolling on its side a lot, weird) and bumblebee snail, emerald crab, and 2 hermits.
Water is all good:
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates <5
Phosphates were last week 0.25-0.1 (still dropping)
PH 8.15 - 8.3
KH 10.5
Calcium 450

We have some things growing and was looking for some help please, in identification and remedy, if required?

Appreciation in advance
Dave

The red/purple stuff in pic 1 looks like cyano sheathing -- this is probably coming due to the big difference between your No3 and Po4 numbers and that it is in part of the tank that is probably getting lower flow.

Pic 2 looks like GHA -- pull what you can and then increase your CUC if this is worsening.

Pic 3 & 4 look like sponges to me....just maybe let them go unless you don't like the look of them.

IMHO, 1, 3, 4 are all sponges - good filter feeders and a sign of a healthy system. If any of the begin to encrust over a coral just trim them back. #2 looks more like bryopsis or another type of filamentous algae. I would suggest pulling that rock out, removing as much as you can by hand, and then pour a generous amount of hydrogen peroxide on the area. Allow it to soak on for several minutes, rinse in some tank water and put the rock back into the tank. The spot that had the H2O2 on it will turn whitish for awhile, but will quickly repopulate with good growth.

hth!

Thanks Guys your knowledge is appreciated. the Blue 'sponge' hasn't really done anything since the rock was added, but I do actually quite like it. The silver grey though has shrunk and then grown a bit. Just starting to add corals, only a blue mushroom and a torch at the mo, and didn't want to put them at risk. When you say just trim them back, is there a particular method to use?

whatever you have handy to scrape parts away. I'd suggest doing it on water change day so that you can siphon out the extra while you are scraping.

Hi Bulldog. Water change yesterday and sucked 99% of the purple stuff out as that was growing quite fast. Almost cotton wool like under the purple sheet!
Not tried the silver /white yet as was running low on water. Try that next week, albeit growing a lot slower. Thanks again. Dave
