Excuse my ignorance on the matter. Can someone please identify critters? Good, bad or indifferent?

Likely some species of copepod but I guess might possibly be some species of isopod or arthopod or some other kind of 'pod. Pretty common and some fish find them quite delectable. Haven't tried them myself.

LOL, thanks for response. been reading, not worried much I guess, just saw where some isopods were parasitic.

these are gammarids- related closer to mysids

Based on past identification attempts and related images, I would suspect that the creatures in question here are actually Munnid isopods, which are typically considered harmless or beneficial clean-up-crew.

They don't look like the cirolanid isopods that are parasitic.
