Picked up a clownfish at lfs (my first one) for $39.99 and I'm wondering what type of clownfish it is. True Percula? False Percula? I really don't know as it was only labeled as Percula Clown. Tried to get a few pics but being a camera, the color is off, but I'm hoping somebody with a keep eye can help me out.

He is darker on his topside and lighter colored on the bottom. He is a little brighter orange than the Clark ii they had for sale and $10 more expensive.

Looks like your run of the mill Ocellaris Clownfish

Whatever it is, it is a great looking fish and he/she has great color. I stopped by LFS again today and bought a 2nd. Is forty bucks a bit steep for a false percula/ocellaris? Do Ocellaris clowns host with anemones? I'm ordering a T5 light fixture so the anemone is my next goal. Nitrates are still up there a tad, at 40ppm, but gradually coming down. Hopefully I'll be at 20ppm next WC. So now I have 2 clowns. How can you tell the difference between the False and true perculas? I've looked and strained my eyes over photos online and what was in lfs and I can't tell anything different. I also bought a small fiddler crab. spent 90 bucks on fish this weekend. I believe it's about time to consider setting up a QT. :crossedlips:

Ah! Honestly, from your pictures, I think I like the False perculia better. Both species host with anemones right?

Our local fish store sells snowflakes for 40. And regular ocellaris for 15-20. Captive bred too. Between the perc and ocellaris I think the percs are cooler when they mature. But they will both be hosted by anemones. I have 2 pairs of percs one hosts a Duncan colony and the other hosts a bubble tip.

They both need a push if they haven't been in with one before. A picture taped to the side of the tank tends to help them figure.

Do you have experience with taping a picture to your tank? My clowns were all different with when they were hosted. One perc pair has never hosted in their anemone. One perc pair hosted at 5 months old as soon as I put them in my tank. My other two pairs are different even still.
I have heard showing the clowns a picture or even video of an anemone hosting works. But I haven't seen direct evidence, just someone saying they heard it works.
