In all my years reef keeping, I have never seen algae like this:

Gonna need a wide shot.
Looks like a puff of smoke.
Is it on the glass?

Well, it doesn't look like any GHA I had seen. But, I am sure there are strains I haven't seen.

I tried a new magfloat and it took a ton of scrubbing to just get some of it off.

I think I will use a razor.

It’s also the stringy stuff in the middle?

yes and no. There is some of it there, but the long strings are mucous from the fresh monti frags right there.

Is it a newish tank?

I’ve had funny calcerous algaes pop up. Acts like corraline, some was I’m sure. Usually faded away.
Is it acting like that ?
No runners or strings ?

I couldn't get a good pic so Dr. Google it was. chrysophytes.

I have read a few things about it but want something known to work.

At this point, since there are no fish in the tank, I am thinking just leave it alone and let it starve itself out.

Thougths?

Interesting. From here it doesn’t look like a Chrysto.
It’s a common one now like dinos.
Generally seems caused by similar things. Low nutrients Esp the Po4.
In larger infestations, same methods to remove. Nutrient dosing and manual removal. Like dinos it’s hit and miss with what method works.

I’m short , stop and coral food dosing Amino , Carbon dosing.

It’s possibe some fluconazole would wipe it out. Peroxide dosing has worked. Fuji mud , grungy live rock, blackouts.

Not dosing anything right now.

I figured I was low on phosphates which I will test tonight.

If I am, I will feed because I have a little serpent star anyhow he needs to eat.

As with all things, patience is a virtue. I fed a little pellet food to the serpent star and went ahead and placed the corals and just waited a couple days.

The algae is 75% gone.

I am just gonna wait this one out.

The sump goes online soon and will be tied into the big tank/sump soon after. That should fix things up considerably over the HOB filter.
