After the passing of my wife, Cory Girl in 2013, I jumped head first into Reefing and failed miserably. I looked at the awesome displays of nature many of you have in your homes and said to myself, " I can do that and I will'. As time progressed I realized I wasn't succeeding. I blamed it on lights, skimmers, bad water quality, local shops...you name it. I kept going for roughly four years and then dropped it. Time, effort, money wasted.
Family and friends would come over and ask what happened and I'd avoid the topic but I couldn't hide my passion and desire to try again and do it right. The Covid-19 pandemic gave me all the time I needed to get back in so.... I began reading Reef2Reef! Day and night I read about RODI and permissible readings, would seams blow out on a tank left a couple years with no water, quarantine, lighting, skimmers, sumps, and every other thing that would pop into my head. Did I mention lighting? If it was a question in my head related to reefing chances are someone had asked it and you, Reef2Reef answered! I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge being shared freely. Gone were the days of pulling books off the shelves in the hope that the author may have found the need to include the answer my concern in the limited space of his or her writings. This was amazing! I'd get up in the middle of the night and grab my laptop to determine if I should add coral or fish first. There was the thread and my question answered! I obtained a better understanding of basic principles and I'm having fun... What more could I ask for?
I want to thank Reef2Reef for the knowledge shared and in advance for the guidance I'm sure I'll be needing as I move forward.
I must admit, I'm terrified about making mistakes and failing but at the same time I'm trying my very best to follow the number one rule I keep reading in the forums, nothing is fast in reefing.... GO SLOW!!!
My 180 is cycled. the 60 cube is at high nitrites and the 40 breeder is set up as a quarantine tank. Here we go people (sigh).

Wow, very sorry to hear about your wife :(

Reefing isn't easy as you have learned (and I definitely have lol). If it was, everyone would have amazing coral like JF, etc. BUT the reward you get off learning out of those mistakes and learning what works and what doesn't. Accepting that challenge and succeeding, then watching your success grow is just a truly amazing thing.

I will agree that I don't think I'd still be in this hobby if it wasn't for R2R. This forum is a godsend. SOOOO many helpful people on here that are significantly smarter than I am :P That have done all the trial and error and learned what worked and are willing to share that with the rest of the community. Did I say this Forum was awesome yet???? lol.

Welcome back bud and I hope the 180 goes well!!!! Love to see some Tangs/Angels in that big tank.

Always ask more questions. My number 1 rule: "The only stupid question is one unasked"

WELCOME Again!!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome dwair. I'm excited to be back and I'm confident I'll not not make the same mistakes again.
I'll agree with you 100%, R2R is awesome and the people are who made it so. The time and effort each one puts in so beneficial to the reader. See you in the forums!

Quarantine all set
Hope to find something good to put in it this holiday weekend

The 60 is still cycling after two weeks of having introduced Brightwell Micro Bacter quick cycl and Start XLM
I called the company a few weeks ago to ask about expiration date on Micro bacter and they were nice enough to send me both products to try.
Thanks to their development manager for the time and the samples.
So far so good. Today makes two weeks. Will test later in day. I think Im close to being cycled

I tested the 60 last night and was surprised to see the Ammonia at .50 ppm and the nitrite reading at 1.0 ppm. I thought I had missed the spike on the Start XLM.

Could really use some help... I ordered a PAR meter to help me place corals correctly but my LFS identified all my coral frags with a marker on wet bags. Needless to say, I'm guessing. I'll attach some pics and hopefully get some guidance. Thanks in advance.

I received the Seneye meter and tried it out today. I was truly surprised at how low my settings were. PAR at the bottom was in the 20's in some areas. I'm trying to bring it up but I know I should do it slowly. Suggestions?

Thanks to my son and laws for doing the heavy work when the Pro star 200 arrived. I tried downloading video of delivery but I must have done something wrong. I have additional pictures as I went through the set up process last month. And I'll post them as I get the time
