I'm wanting to dip my toes back into salt water tanks probably with a IM40. If I kept it at FOWLR could I get away with just water changes, skimmer and maybe filter socks?

The plan is to eventually make it a reef but wanting a simple set-up for the time being. I've not had a tank in about 10 years and a lot has changed in that time period, pretty exciting actually!

Nope, no need to dose. The only reason to dose is to replace alk and calc consumed by coral growth.

If you have just a fowlr with no corals, you don't need to do any dosing, just weekly water changes and skimming and filter socks if you want to use them :)

Thank you, that certainly makes it an easier choice! I could go FOWLR while I'm getting everything else together and not have to rush anything.

Yup, great way to start. Just don't use any copper or other meds in your tank if you want to easily add coral in the future.
