Yes but no not really.. they don’t sit there and just punch the glass in the same spot over and over. Maybe if you kept a large mantis in a undersized tank with thin glass.

You can put a piece of acrylic on the bottom of the tank under the sand to absorb any shock to be extra safe in case the mantis digs down and punches the glass repeatedly thinking it needs to smash through a rock. I never had one do such a thing though.

They can control how hard they punch as well as mine would give me little love taps when doing maintenance and zoom across the glass smacking it when I got home. Probably her way of saying... where have you been and where is the food!

In addition to being an awesome skill, the chemical makeup of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp’s dactyl clubs may have some scientific significance for future architecture and material synthesis. (The main ingredients in the fists of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp are chitin and some crystallized calcium phosphate). They are known to have broken 1/4" aquarium glass at a force of 50 MPH.

There aren't any known cases where this has occurred. IMO it's kind of an urban legend. They might even be able to do it theoretically (not sure on that), but no one has actually reported it happening to them.
