Looks like I'm getting some cyano. I've lowered my Hydor Koralia pump and ordered 2 Innovative Marine Spin Stream Universal Nozzles for the tank. I've seen a ton of mixed reviews on these, but I really like my power head on the back of the tank instead of the side - and I'm hoping these will give me more flow to combat the cyano.

I have the SpinStream nozzles on my tank. Occasionally they will get jammed up with calcium carbonate and stop spinning. This was happening to me every 2-3 weeks for a while, but now it hasn't happened in the last two months so maybe my water conditions were off before (CaCO3 shouldn't be precipitating out of the water if everything's balanced correctly). Either way, when it happened I would pop them off and submerge them in a glass of pure vinegar for 15 minutes or so. Then I'd blow through them which makes them spin, the remaining chunks of white gunk would fall out, I'd rinse them in water and pop them back in. I get much better "random" flow in my tank with them than I did with the fixed nozzles.

I would be curious to try the fixed random flow generators from Vivid Creative Aquatics, but since I already dropped $50 on the SpinStreams, I have a hard time justifying it...

Yes and no.

I don't find anything on my tank to be particularly loud, but it's in my basement and there's usually a dehumidifier or the washing machine or something running that is much louder. Personally, my ghost skimmer (which I think is actually really quiet) is the loudest thing on my tank.

When I first installed the SpinStreams, one of them did make a noticeable noise. It seems to have faded over time, and possibly my vinegar treatments are helping. They're just injection molded plastic, and the tolerances aren't super tight, so I could imagine the noise varies a lot from sample to sample. If your tank is in your bedroom, you might notice it.

I had the fixed random flow generators on my 20, and now on my 50 lagoon.

They work awesome, highly recommend them.

Sooooo much better than the spin streams.

I liked my spinstreams and no noise but you have to watch them and keep them somewhat clean. My would occasionally seize up with purple coralline algae so had to dip in vinegar every so often. Just made it part of my routine. I also used Sicce 1.5 as my return. Great flow and quiet.

I also kept my water line a little higher by using Universal Surface skimmer from inTank.

I'll second the Sicce Syncra Silent 1.5 as a return pump. That's what I have and it is WAY quieter than the Innovative Marine stock return.

That's great! I'll add the Sicce Syncra Silent 1.5 to my list - the stock return pump does make more noise than I care for. I've gotten a little used to it now but it drives me crazy when there's no other noise around to drown it out, lol.

Got the Spin Streams installed! They look good and seem to work well. There is a little bit of a "clacking" noise, but I'm hoping that will fade away once they're broken in.

Looking good! I think the sound will fade like mine did.

Interestingly, your seem to spin in opposite directions. Mine spin in the same direction. I wonder if there are clockwise and anti-clockwise versions, or if it's just random?

Just found this on another forum, but haven't checked it myself "I've had them for a year and I just found out after cleaning them, you can change the direction they rotate by flipping the gear inside. "

I ended up switching to the DS schedule. I think I'll like the higher blues better. I felt like I wasn't seeing the best color from my coral with the other schedule. Thanks for the recommendation!
