Hello all! New to the site. I've been in the hobby on and off for the last 13 years. My previous set up was a 75. I've downsized to the lagoon and found that there isn't very much information out there on how people have made this system work form them.

There are so many different ways to configure this tank. When I decided to go with the IM 25 Lagoon, I was really concerned about the protein skimmer. After many years of trial and error, to me, the skimmer and lighting are the most important parts of any system. With this in mind, I decided that skimming efficiency was more important to me than the sleekness that this beautiful design sets out to achieve (plan on making modifications to hide the skimmer). IM makes skimmers (Ghost skimmers) for these tanks but after much research, I just wasn't happy with the reviews they received. At the end of the day I decided to go with the Aquamaxx 1.5 HOB.

This is by far the best skimmer I have every used and the break-in time was barely noticeable. I had micro bubbles for maybe a week. Anyhoo.... let's get in to the other upgrades that I've made to the tank to make it pretty much end up being the tank that I've always wanted.

1. I upgraded the pump. I read that the pump that IM puts in the system is lacking in power and is a little too loud for such a small system. I ended up doing two separate pumps that are each rated at about 250 gallons per hour. I also upgraded the nozzles to the spin stream made by IM. These are fantastic but can be fragile. Be careful when cleaning them. The gear mechanism has a tendency to jam and mess up the rotation of the nozzle.

2. I ended up going with the AI Prime HD for my lighting. In my opinion, this light is a great deal. There are so many threads out there for this lighting system so I'll keep it at that.

3. I took the hydro wave maker control system from my 75 and paired it with one 425g/hour Koralia pump on five second intervals. It's worked very well so far and I'm happy with it until I have it in me to buy an MP10.

4. I have a Smart micro auto top off. I feel like these are absolutely necessary, especially for a nano system. I've had no issues with it and would highly recommend it, even for larger systems.

5. I decided to go with a Cobalt ne-therm heater. I've never used a more precise heater. You set it and it stays.

Finally, I ended up sucking it up and getting the Nuvo APS stand. It's super expensive but the aluminum design makes for an aquarium stand that lasts. The design blends nicely to whatever look you're going for.

Live stock: Bonded pair of Bullet flurry clownfish, a purple fire fish, bubble tip anemone, green toadstool, torch coral and a few different kind of mushroom colonies.

Guess that was my way of introducing myself to the forum. Please let me know what you think or how I could improve the set up.

Happy reefing!

Doesn't Aquamaxx make a nano in sump skimmer that fits the fusion? I'm asking because i have the same tank and don't want that HOB skimmer- how's it going so far, good?

Your system looks good!

Thanks! Aquamaxx does make a mini. I'm really not sure what the dimensions are and if it fits in the chamber. I wanted a little more skimming power though. I think the rating for the mini is 30 gallons. The HOB 1.5 is rated for 90 gallons for a light bio load and 60 for a heavy. Again, overkill for many I'm sure.

It's been up and running for about 6 months now. Things are going well.

What pump did you use for the return? The tank looks nice.

I’ve been planning a nano for about 2 months and this is my tank of choice. Going for zoas and shrooms only so a pair of kessil a80’s for me. I like stocking up as well on fish so I was looking at the HoB 1.5 as well, has it been holding up like you hoped? Looking good!

Nice looking torch! Your tank looks great. I’ve had mine set up for about three months now. I have an In Tank brand floss holder in the back right compartment and a IM media basket on the left. I’m really looking into adding a refugium on the right next to the floss holder. No skimmer for me. I tried the Reef Octopus NS80, but decided to see how it goes with weekly water changes instead. I love these AIO lagoons.

Get the chaeto max light works great. I use mine on the far left chamber been taking out chaeto every week

Update? How's the skimmer doing? I'm setting up a lagoon also

Also curous about the skimmer. I have an IM 20 with basically the same set up as you. I just ordered the HOB 1.0 on clearance and will be getting it monday! Its basically the same skimmer you have.

I'm planning a setup almost identical to yours.

I've been frustrated finding a good skimmer for the lagoon. There doesn't seem to be a good one that is small and the 1.5 HOB is quite big. You mentioned making modifications to hide the skimmer. Did you do that? I'd love to hear ideas how to hide this beast. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experience.

Did you end up getting the skimmer? How is it? Does it have Micro bubble issue?

I did end up getting the HOB1.5 skimmer. I do like it and recommend it. However, it did have a clear microbubble issue. In my tank it took about 1-2 months for it to stop and it works very well now. I think the small nano tank skimmers just aren't as good and I am glad I have this big one as HOB.

I set up the same tank about 5 weeks ago. I moved my livestock from my IM Fusion 10. I kind of went another direction since I'm primarily doing zoas, LPS and a few easy (monti's) SPS.

I went with two AI Prime 16's. For pumps I went with one Sicce 1.0 and one Sicce 1.5 and used RFG's instead of the Spin Stream I used on my 10 gal. Total a little over 600 gph flow and no power head in the tank. Same ATO as you're using. So far I love this tank.

Any updates on your IM25 Lagoon and the Aquamaxx 1.5 hob?

I too have the same setup and installed the Aquamaxx 1.5 last night. There was virtually no break in time, but I did see many micro bubbles.
