If you understand my introduction title and avatar - kinda like Jeff Foxworthy says - "You might be an old timer!"
Intro
I've been maintaining aquariums since I was a teen in the early 80's. Like most it started with some 10 gallon tanks and Neons. After moving to the Florida panhandle in the late 80's, I read a book by Martin A. Moe called "The Marine Aquarium Handbook". At this point I swapped over to saltwater aquariums and never looked back. In the mid-90's after retiring from the Navy Nuclear submarine force (I was on board the fast attack sub SSN-704 - USS Baltimore), I picked up another book called "The Reef Aquarium Vol 1" by Sprung and Delbeek. I'm sure you can guess it - I started up a reef tank!
Before the 25th Century
I've followed many different methods to provide a stable saltwater environment for my marine friends. From plenum, to deep sand bed, to Berlin, and onward to the wet/dry. Although I would consider my husbandry fairly mature, we all get busy, go on road trips. or well, just get busy. Therefore, at times my marine friends had a messy house. I've been to the 25th Century now, but I'm gonna need some help from friends to learn and be successful with bigger and better equipment.
After the 25th Century
I've already started a build on used 80 gallon that I picked up from my LFS. For this tank I want to use modern methods of both the marine environment for a mixed reef tank as well as modern husbandry methods to ensure my marine friends feel like they are still in the reefs of our oceans.
On the selection of a method to maintain my reef, I've decided to use the BRS/WWC method as I think this will fit my goals the best. It's going to be tough not running sand, but change is hard.
Since I am a computer scientist and my day job is to install manufacturing control systems I've decided to go with DIY control using the ReefPi to assist with the husbandry aspects of the hobby.
I look forward to interacting with you on the boards, on facebook, on youtube, or in person (at meets or shows)!! As a parting gift, I leave you with a small peak into my softie 39-Gallon Hex!!
