Hi all, I have a 75g IM tank with their APS stand. Love all of it so far, except I'm a bit concerned about sump support. I have a 20L for a sump, and it's only supported by the two bars at the bottom of the stand, both about 1/3 of the way in from the corners of the sump. The PVC board they give to cover the bottom provides zero support.

It's been like this for about a month, and for whatever reason it just didn't register with me. I'm wondering if this tank will have the proper support, or if I should do something like throw a metal sheet under it for added support, or maybe some angle iron the length of the tank all around.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I used a sheet of cabinet grade plywood across the bottom for support of the sump.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking I might do.

Do you think there would be any concerns long term with the tank leaking if I can get it supported now? As in, should I replace the tank?

The tank should be fine. Regarding the plywood for the base, you will have to section it to get it in the stand (probably obvious:)) since it is assembled.

I wouldn't bother replacing the sump.

I was going to cut a piece 32"x14" to fit just under the sump. I was then gonna dump as much water from the sump as possible and just slide the wood in. I have some pond liner in there to protect against spills so was just going to put it under that so I don't have to worry about waterproofing the wood. I think that should fit ok without needing to section the wood. *crosses fingers*

Very paranoid about the tank having experienced enough structural stress to eventually pop a seam even after I get it supported. Ugh I don't know how I didn't think of this during assembly. I'm usually on-point with such things.

I have same stand. I have a question and an observation-do you have any issues with tank sitting flush on stand? I have a 75 int Im building and tank has a gap on back left side.
Also, I was looking at manual. Aren’t the 4 cross braces supposed to be on bottom?

No, everything on my stand came together nicely. I built it on a flat surface and made sure everything was square before tightening. It's a nice stand but I think if I move or something I might have something custom built for it.

You should only have two crossbraces on the bottom. The 4 go across the top under your tank, and there should be 1 vertically in the back.

If there's a gap check to make sure everything is even and square. The instructions are not the best. :(

Having 4 on top makes sense on one hand, but since the tank receives so much support from the outer rails, whereas the sump sits on the inner supporting rails, I would think that four on bottom makes sense. It probably doesn't matter overall. Here is a snip of the manual. Thanks for the input. I will disassemble stand once more to make sure everything is square. Enjoy your tank.

Edit-2 vs 4 on top or bottom has been bothering me, so I reached out to Innovative Marine. They said more rails go on bottom, per the manual. They said they used to have 2 on top and bottom before they started making sumps, then they began providing more for the bottom. Like I said, it probably does not matter either way, but my sump feels very supported.

That's not how my manual for the 75g ext is, but it might be different because i don't have the plumbing going through the stand so extra cross braces won't block it.

If I still have the manual I'll look at it to be sure, but i built mine twice to make sure it was right and have two cross braces on the bottom, 4 on the top and 1 vertical brace in the back. The one vertical doesn't actually support any weight at all - you can make move it a little even when tightened completely with a full tank on top.

The stand is quite strong, and overall pretty nice but I think a well-made plywood stand or a self designed aluminum extrusion stand using off the shelf parts would be both more functional and probably look nicer. The fit and finish off my stand is decent and worth the price i paid, but i feel like i could have gotten more value going another direction.

The tank itself is fantastic though and I am very happy with it.

Have you considered removing the vinyl from the sides of the tank? I've been going back and forth on whether i want to do as there is no going back.

I have the int model, and like it overall. I think it is the best value for the money and should outlast the typical particle board stand. As to the vinyl parts, I don't know if my wife will let me lol!
