Yesterday I was doing some routine maintenance on my tank, and time got away from me and i had to get ready for work. (I work nights). So I wrapped everything up, jumped in the shower, got ready and left. Came home this morning to a cloudy tank. I almost instantly knew what was wrong. I checked where my green BTA had been parked. Not there. Looked at the powerhead. NO SPONGE FILTER.... It was still soaking in the container i use... I'm so devastated right now. I should've known better than to try to do all that before work, but I usually start earlier in the day and finish plenty early. Still can't believe i did that. And the one night he decides to go cruising.

Hope nothing other than the BTA was hurt.

One very simple oversight/mistake can cause a catastrophe. Long ago I would drip kalk at night using a 5 Gal bucket with an IV hose. Would put the bucket beside the frag tanks which were on homemade stands and let it drip into the sump overnight.

Was checking the tanks before work the next morning, and moved the now empty kalk bucket into the floor. Got home that afternoon to a very unhappy frag tank. The water from the sump siphoned back into the bucket and overflowed onto the floor and the ATO tried to keep up. Salinity was around 1.010. Lost a few coral and took the rest of them awhile to recover.

Moral of the story? Never take even the smallest action for granted.

Everything else seems fine. Fortunately my bio load is super light anyway. I did do a water change and skimmed wet as possible for several hours. Gonna keep a close eye on ammonia for the next few days.

Sorry for your loss. After my first BTA committed suicide by powerhead, I built a cage around mine with black eggcrate. There is one BTA (out of the 3 in that tank) unsuccessfully attempting suicide near this powerhead, but so far, so good.
