well i wouldnt have never thought this would have happened. I always wanted a big beautiful EXPENSIVE clam, so I waited till everything seemed to be good. I already had a clam for a while in the tank that was looking well and attached, so i figure i was ready for an ultra grade beautiful clam from tahiti. so i get this beautiful clam from Pacific east aquaculture, everything goes well acclimate and everything. Gets in the tank and opens up like a clam champ. it was so aweasome and beautiful. so eventually he was getting closed up a little and I moved him to the top where he seemed to like it more. He was happy for a while like this. hes been in the tank looking good for more than 2 months. All of a sudden one day hes just closed up and was barely showing any mantle. so i waited a day or 2 and thought it was gonna go away. well it didn't go away and I thought I had to do something. So i read that giving a fresh water dip might help. So i matched the temp of the tank water to some rodi. put the clam in a bowl and waited a little more than 5 minutes. Put him back in the tank and he did not look good so i checked to see if he lived because before I took him out im pretty sure he was alive. Anyways i poked his sucked in mantle to see if he would retract and i didnt see much. I did this over and over again trying to see movement, but i didnt so i just left him in the tank over night hoping he would get better somehow. Next day hes dead wide open and making a huge mess in the tank. I felt so sad and angry at myself so i dont know if Ill ever get another clam. Also did a water change that day too. Anyone know what happened. The clam litterally went from being open fully to being closed up and dead in a few days?????

That's too bad. :-(

What type of clam was it?

Did you match the pH in the dip?

I think Skinz knows about clams.

I am sorry to hear. :( I had a perfectly healthy clam for over a year and then overnight it was dead. OVERNIGHT!

Those big Tahitian clams have a poor survival rate, so even if you didn't dip it, it was probably a goner. Many have unexplainabley died in the 3 month or less range.

Same thing happened to me!! with those tahitian clams. It was perfect for a few months and dead. I had no pests and no fish that bothered them???

I believe FW dips are very stressful for clams per Skinz guide and it should only be done if the diagnosis of Pinched Mantle is given (skinz actually saved me once from FW dipping my clam and he was totally right I did not have PM).

Sorry to hear about the clam...they are sensitive little guys and from lots of recent research on various online resources, a mystery clam death is not very unusual at all.

Hope skinz can chime in here to help out some more. GL with your tank, man!

Yep, the Tahitian's have a horrible survival rate IMHO, you honestly couldn't give me one at this point.

And doing a FWD is one of the worst things you can do to a clam unless it is a last resort in treating a clam with pinched mantle. From what you are saying the clam probably didn't have PM.

I wonder what it is with that region of the world that has such sensitive clams. Maybe some research on what is in the water in Tahiti will shed some light?
