I was thinking about doing this to distribute the return flow throughout the tank. The PVC in the tank will have a hole of a yet undetermined size evenly spaced across the length of the PVC in the tank.

Thoughts?

They do similar on freshwater tanks.

Another option could be to run it under the sand/rockwork and have it tee off with nozzles in varying locations throughout the tank.
 
Did that on my discuss tank. Worked great but i wanted soft indirect flow there. In a reef i don't think it will add to your flow enough

I always did this on smaller tanks, never on a 6 ft tank.

I'm not adding flow, I'm distributing existing flow.
 
Other thing i would suggest, if you do want to do that, is 90 the far end up and over the tank too, that will keep it from getting torqued.

That's a great idea!

I could span the entire length of the tank doing that.
 

... But here is what concerns me...

Having returns at the bottom of the tank will allow most of the volume to siphon out in the event of a power failure.

I drill a hole at the top 90 just below the water line as an anti-siphon. When the overflow drains the tank down, the hole should be above the water level and it'll suck air and stop the siphon.
