I got a bunch of random stuff in a craigslist deal and these were in there:

The packaging says it's suppose to be replaced every 3 months. What is the reason for that? So they can sell you more or because it disintegrates or something?

Mmmm... I wouldn't trust it. Not only because of the skepticism of the source you got it from, but mainly because it doesn't make sense to put those in your sump or back chambers to support the colony of bacteria, yet it is to be replaced every three months along with your bacterial colonies. The only reason I could think of that label is to diminish your biological filter when you take it out, forcing you to replace it so they sell more, correct. Hope this helps

So they do break down? I have plenty of LR but these came with some other stuff and I thought I might as well throw them in. If they break down I think I'll just toss them.

they are ceramic, the only way the break down is if you tumble them. I have something like that in my freshwater tank, still going after 5 years and that media never broke

I would not even bother with them. Mostly used for fresh water.
