My angels face has been this way for months. Is this a problem? Or normal transformation?

Thanks!

That looks like a really gnarly infection... @Humblefish @melypr1985 thoughts?

Has it worsened in that timeframe? It almost looks like dead flesh at this point.

Wow I stand corrected! I've never seen HLLE like that in a large angel

Edit: I guess I see it in the first pic but I've never seen HLLE like that on an angel! But I agree that's likely what it is

Besides the hlle that doesn't look like an emperator angel.
Oh yes good point. I didn't read the species name but this is in fact a Koran angel.

I agree. I've seen this in a Koran not too long ago. It was a little more advanced and than this, but the angel passed despite attempts to help it. You'll want to read that link Humble posted and do your best to make a few changes and quickly.

Wow great info thanks!! I have had him for about a year, and he probably tripled in size in that time. His face started looking like that about 3 months ago. It was sold to me as an imperator! Is it contagious? All of my fish appear very healthy to my amateur eye. I will research thanks

What are the water parameters in the tank? Also what is the diet?
Usually HLLE might develop from wrong diet or unsuitable parameters. Maybe stray voltage also, etc.. Dont worry its not contagious as it is not a parasitic disease, but bad case of HLLE might weaken the fish allowing parasitic diseases to infect it.

Also, if I cure it, does the skin return, or does it leave the scarring? I ask because it has not gotten any worse in at least a month or so, and he acts very healthy

The tank always runs a little dirty, nitrates around 30 or so. No nitrites, no ammonia, salinity at 1.024. I was just researching angel fish diet. I don't feed any special angel food. I rotate between mysis, mixed reef cubes, squid, formula 2 flakes. I do have an issue with stray voltage, but everyone else in the tank is fine. I know I need to figure out the voltage deal, just haven't yet. Are angels just more sensitive to the disease?

Is it contagious?
No. It will effect most angels/tangs and some other fish when water conditions/diet are not ideal. There are other things that are believed to contribute to it as well like low quality carbon and stray voltage.

When it's this bad, it's unlikely to heal all the way. The angel will probably have scars from it and it may never grow back with the color. It could grow back new skin with color in some places but probably not all.
I do have an issue with stray voltage
You'll want to fix this pretty quick.

Ok I'll check it out tonight

Soak the food in selcon if vita chem, keep water especially clean, and feed high quality foods as well to help. I'd remove "cheap" copper as well, as its highly correlated with the development of HLLE.

^^ This is a SERIOUS PROBLEM, for both you & the animals in your aquarium. It is also likely the source of your Koran's HLLE.

Please fix it ASAP. People have been electrocuted from leaking voltage in water.

Ive got an emperor in a mixed reef and he's looking good. Try feeding dried seaweed like Two Little Fishies "Sea Veggies" and frozen angelfish food that contains some sponge. Should work for a Koran as well. Get your nitrates down!
