Should I take some water back home and put it in my tank for bacteria diversity? Or bad idea

No! I wouldn’t. It could bring parasites in and would probably have a lot of die-off of bacteria and other things making it less effective if diversity is your goal etc. Plus ocean chemistry is different than synthetic salt. Not to mention the weight of it with luggage and it only being able to go through checked bags unless it’s less than 3.4 ounces lol! I think it would be pointless and cause more harm than good/be more of a pain and have little to no benefit with diversity or a thriving tank. Just my two sense.

Imo in free water theres not much bacteria to find.
I mean yeah there is some but i dont think that helps.

Seems like a lot of work for little potential benefit.

I've added local seawater a few times as an experiment and never saw any changes.

I'm of the understanding that there is very little bacteria in water. It mostly proliferates surfaces.

A baby food jar full of sand would be illegal and inadequate to seed.

Like cactus above, I would do it just for kicks, would make me happy knowing I have a little of Hawaii in my tank, benefits or not.

Ok, likely a litre of Hawaiian seawater isn’t going to perform miracles but are we agreeing that there is very little bacteria in seawater?

Very little is a relative term. One liter of seawater might contain 1 billion bacteria.

"The ocean is one of the largest reservoirs of bacteria. On average, every liter of seawater contains ∼1 billion bacteria, and there are a total of ∼1029 bacteria in the world's oceans (204), constituting the bulk of ocean biomass"

Might not be much or any benefit, but not really harmful either.

Yes , you should, you should also put 2 small Hawaiian flame wrasses in your mouth , while going through checkpoints in the airport after spit them out in the water y collected , then sell to me…..

FWIW, in the 1970's, my brother brought two domino damsels back to the US from Tahiti in a 2 L Pepsi bottle. They lived for years in his aquarium. Customs were more laughing at it than concerned. lol

Find something small that has been submerged and isn’t illeagal and throw it in your suitcase. It’ll dry out some but the bacteria on the inside of pores will be ok and it won’t trigger any suspicion from authorities.

After 10 straight days of quality surf the festering sea ulcer on my ankle concurs with this clarification.

There's a bunch of bacteria in the water, but if you wanted to bring back some material that had a chance at changing the microbial composition of your system in a measurable way, then a few grams of sand would give you a better chance than a bottle of water.
