In need of advice

I'm going to be moving my 125 (appr 8 years old) to a brand new smaller aquarium (65 gallon). Keeping sand, corals, fish, etc.....just need to know the best way to do this without my fish and corals suffering! Any suggestions/ideas on how best to do this.

Best advice is to not transfer over the old sand. Old sand traps detritus and other junk, and when you stir it up it gets released into the water and causes minor to major nutrient swings. So get new sand. For your rock and fish, brute trash cans work best. They're offered in a bunch of different sizes and are safe for fish and coral and can be found at most stores. Empty out tank water into the brute cans, put your fish and rock in there. Put in your new sand and then you can add most of the water you saved back into the smaller tank. I hope this helps

Crabs offers good advise on sand. After so many years, of crud in it , really a lot easier to use new .

Yes I agree with the do not transfer sand. I have moved 2 tanks this month. Kept the water rock and fish. New sand. Kept the fish in a tank during the move. Nothing died. No coral loss and nothing cycled.

Thanks for the advice and I did go with "new" live sand. My tank is up and running and have added 2 fish so far - so good!
