Hey all! I'm wondering if anyone has attempted an in-tank cipro treatment in a system that contains clams.

I recall a while back Ciprofloxacin taking out someones clam and note it has an effect on bacteria, oxygen and appetite as its a anti-biotic. You want food grade version and I can say that chemiclean is safe for clams and is also an antibiotic so it would appear as safe.

Multiple times in multiple systems.
Do you mean in systems with clams? I have some LPS that have been looking blah for quite a while and after researching I believe this may help. But not at the expense of my beautiful squamosas.
What dose have you used with success?

Many people have done in tank treatments, with Cipro in system with clams and the clan is not affected.

Lps looking Blah, is also not a reason to treat the system with antibiotics. An Active Bacterial Infection is the only reason this should be done as there are side effects we know of, and I'm sure some we don't.

Focus on water parameter stability within an appropriate range for the LPS, confirm light and flow are correct, confirm no active pest infestation.

If you think you have an active bacterial infection, let's talk about it.

What is the purpose of doing the in tank treatment? I have tried a cipro in tank and also RTN/STN x by fauna marin as a cure to brown jelly disease. Honestly I have noticed more of an improvement with the fauna marin product as opposed to cipro.

I’ve treated systems with clams with Ciprofloxacin, it doesn’t affect them. But as previously mentioned, “blah” LPS doesn’t indicate a bacterial infection. A bacterial infection progresses very quickly in LPS and kills them within days if not sooner.

Hello everyone and thank you for the replies. I apologize, my initial post does sound like a novice reefer trying to throw cipro at the wall to see if it sticks.
While I would not consider myself an expert reefer, I do believe I have a pretty solid understanding of general coral husbandry. That said, I don't believe the issue to be from lighting/flow or even water chemistry. (65 gallon LPS heavy - x2 Gen 5 Radion XR 15 - single MP40, plumbed to sump and auxiliary 50g Lowboy SPS heavy - Reefbrite 250w M.H + T5)
This is a Reef Moonshiners system so I also have a good handle on the chemistry of the water.

So the problem...

About two years ago, while working at a LFS, I brought home some random Acans that had come in as a "junk dump" from a wholesaler.
Those Acans just looked washed out, grey, and just deflated/weak. Soon after, every Acan in my system had started to look and act the same way.
Weeks down the road other LPS (Scolys, Trachy, and mostly Torches) started to show similar symptoms.
In all of my years of reefing, I've experienced BJD, RTN, STN etc. but this is different.
The acans have actually started to look better after 2 years now, but my torches are still struggling. Receding membrane at the base. No splits. Shrinking
I used to be able to grow torches like crazy! 3-4+ splits a month on numerous colonies.

I've attempted numerous KFC dips and while they do seem to help, it doesn't get rid of the problem.

I'm about to send out for Aquabiomics testing but wanted to check with you all for some knowledge.

Thanks again.

What did you do. It sounds like we have the same issue

I just finished my second (of 3) dose of oxolinic acid, a quinolone antibiotic like cipro, and my deresa clam hasn’t missed a beat. Hope this information helps with your decision making process.

Thank you for the intel.
May I ask where you got the oxolinic acid?
Also, what is the dosing process for it?

I’d be interested in this as well. I got mine from cascade pond supply. It’s listed as a treatment for Koi.

I’m doing a quarter tablespoon 3 days over the course of a week. I did my first dose yesterday and can’t say I noticed anything different. I may be under dosing.
