so i came home from today and discovered something disturbing. the day before i moved a few corals that i got from TSA from my quarantine tank to my main reef display tank. i glued a pineapple juice acro to one of my rocks last night. today, i come home from work and this white mass was sticking to the mouth of my rabbit fish ( Biote tank raised scribbled rabbit). luckily i was able to net it and observe the fish. it looks like it nibbled the base of the acro and the glue just stuck to the fish......luckily i was able to cut the glue off of the mouth of the fish.

i used glue from BRS and thought that it would dry and set fairly quickly in water. i'm concerned that when i start gluing more corals that this fish might get into trouble again.......should i worry?

yeah that’s a issue….use some instant set then
…google super glue instant set and pick one…
good luck
I don’t think using insta set in a wet, running tank is ideal.

@ocnbrze

What’s your gluing method? If you glue under water, you need to puncture the glue bubble to make it set rapidly. If not, it’ll take a long time to dry.

I personally glue a glob outside the water, then smush it on the rock, slightly twisting and turning and the entire frag gets stuck with no sticky residue.

ha ha yeah probably not, I was thinking he was gluing and mounting like I do: on a dry rock piece, I spray that with accelerant then attach the frag…
in the tank it’s then “rock to rock”
… forgot some people glue/mount frags directly…

I “sorta” avoid a few issues by mounting outside the tank…I keep lots of rock rubble just for mounting and then use Tunze coral gum …one of the few brands that works adequately without super glue, but better with

i just glued the acro and then attach it to the rock in water...no accelerant. i have two pretty big NSA rocks that i do not want to remove from the tank just to add a piece of coral to.

should i be using accelerant?

You could also put the fish in a breeder box while the glue sets.. I would think this might be a little stressful but less than the fish gluing it’s mouth shut :(

i actually was thinking of using the little cup that TSA ships their coral in to cover the coral on the rock as the glue sets. catching the fish each time is just to stressful on the fish as well as me. have you ever tried catching a fish in a reef tank? even using a trap is not very convenient to do each time i glue coral. maybe something like a net over the coral might do as well.

Catching the fish isn’t necessary. If you glue the frag with proper technique, it should dry in the tank within 5-10 seconds. Did you try the method I described above?

You need to smush the glue glob against the rock. It will solidify in that very moment.

that is what i thought would happen with the glue curring in 5-10 seconds. that is why i was shocked to see my poor fish the next day. this is the first time i have seen this happen. i think also the fact that i decided to glue the piece of coral at night might have something to do with this. i just glued it and walked away and did somethings and went to sleep. never really observed the tank after it was glued.

and i have not yet tried your method. i do have other corals that i will need to glue to the rock. i will for sure try that later today or tomorrow.

Your idea sounds better!
