My pod population grows and dies instantly. Sometimes I look into my cheato and see thousands of critters, look at my rocks overnight and see thousands more. Then somehow they just all disappear. I searched and searched this morning and cannot find 1. This is a viscous cycle in my tank. What’s do you think shocks my population to extinction on a regular basis?

Any fish that eat them?

My guess is they don't die out, they are just hiding. We can only see the larger pods, but 90% of them are so tiny, they are not visible to the naked eye.

When I was going fallow for ich a few years back my tank had so many pods the rocks were literally crawling with them. Added fish back in, and they just disappeared overnight with 0 fish that would typically hunt them. Added a leopard wrasse a few months later, and it constantly picks them off my rocks although I cannot see them. This fish is fat and happy an will eat nothing I offer, just picks pods all day.

I agree it's more likely they are hiding. In my own refugium, some days the glass crawls with hundreds of pods. Some days no matter how hard I look I can't find a single one.

Unless your tank is absolutely brand new or something. That could cause some cycles in population between ammonia spikes and food sources. But if your tank is up and running for a while and staying stable, I would assume they are hiding.

More nocturnal than diurnal.

I hope their hiding. I’m going to keep looking
